Springbattle Day 1

Yesterday i headed to Flachauwinkel for the Springbattle. We had a pretty nice to time today for checking the setup and tomorrow its time for the qualifications. stay tuned

we found several nice spots and we just need some fresh deep snow to hit these things in a serious way!

Springtime

right now its like in april, so instead of making some powdershots it was time for some parkshootings and some springobstacles. i'm really looking forward to see some fresh snow and collection faceshots again!

Northface Skichallenge

This weekend the Northface Skichallenge took place in Flachauwinkel, Absolutpark. We had perfect conditions with powder and bluebird on saturday for the freeride competition and also a well shaped park for the freeskisession today. So all in all we had an awesome time on the mountain and a big respect goes out for the high level of riding of all the younguns.

Helsinki

right now i am in helsinki with the nitro roadwarriors. the decision that i come with them was pretty spontaneous, so i was pretty bussy to prepare everything and get up there by plane. we already have half time of our trip and here are some impressions of what we have done yet.

Recap of the last four weeks

After Kranjska Gora in the middle of december i headed directly to Flachauwinkel to get my first powderruns. I already knew that i was late but it didn‘t stop snowing so i still got heaaps of nice faceshots ;) So after some days i mixed it up and took josh absenger and herby thaler to get my first powdershots of the season. Within some days we got serval nice shots.

till christmas i did several urbanspots like with the BWA girls, LOVE or with several riders of the pickingfam. Here are some impressions.

At the beginning of january i was in a mood for capturing a bigline. So Sebastian Fischer and I looked for a nice face and luckily we found a sick couloir with a dropout! The conditions were not the best but bastl did it well and found a nice line. (the green one). After that we looked for some cliffs and i was pretty impressed of his progression in dropping cliffs!

That was kinda the last day in the bc because of the warm weather. So I decided to have a few more urban shootings in the city before the snow was gone.

Slovenia

right now i'm in slovenia for some urban spots. pretty sick what we found within a few hours and the weather always changes between dumping and bluebird.

In the last weeks some quite nice things happened!
First i wonna start with the Berlin-trip. I was invited to the price-giving of the the peter schlüschen stiftung where i made the 3rd place! pretty stoked about that and we had tree nice days there.

The next really sweety thing was that i finally finished my thesis. The books are printed and i'm looking forward for the presentation in two weeks! Between i went for a week to the dominican republic. kinda the last time catching some warm sunny weather before the season starts. so here are some pics from this really nice country and now a loong winter can start.

yesterday was the hardlymountain in kaumberg (lower austria). a pretty sick party with awsome bands like alkbottle. even the heavy rain couldn't stop the crowed... here are some impressions

Two years ago it was the first time that i started to focus on shooting snowboarders and freeskiers. So after that winter it was time to look for some printed publications during the last season. I was pretty stoked to have so many after the first year and i'm looking forward to show you even more during the next winter. Summer or is there still some winter?

now i'm back in salzburg and yesterday i checked out a spot and i still found some snow. we also did some funny runs on the last pieces and wasn't too hot up there. so this weekend will be probably the reeeeeally final shooting, except of the glaciers ;)

well, right now is not too much snowboarding going on. sorted the last snowboardpiy for mags, did my last shootings and now i'm writing on my thesis. so it never gets boring! right now i'm in the netherlands and did some kitesurfing and wakeboarding instead of snowboarding. here are some impressions of this reaaaly flat country ;)

Last weekend I was invited to spend some days with the Austrian and German Bataleon team in Hintertux. It was nice to meet some friends after the summer on the glacier and to have two funny shootingdays with them. Here are some pics from the trip.

Some days ago I had a photosession with two guys from the RedBull Salzburg. First we tried to get some shots in a gym with a foampit, but soon we went out for some "real" shots. Was quite funny with them, but now the winter is here and the first railsession of the season can start.

Last Days

My trip in NZ will be over tomorrow. Since Ohau we still found some nice powder but spring came quite fast. The last two weeks we spent in some clubbies doing some nice backcountrysession and also on the northcoast for having some beachdays. I just can say that it is really worth to visit this awesome country and score an extra winterseason during summer.

Ohau

Almost the whole last week we spent in Ohau, which one of the most beautiful places we have seen in New Zealand. We stayed at the bottom of the mountain in the Ohau lodge with free hot tubs and an awesome view to the lake. After two days of bad weather we got a nice dump and 3 sweet powderdays followed in the backcountry. My best birthday I’ve ever had…

Milford Sound

We spent endless hours checking weather forecasts on the internet, searching for somewhere to ride in these terrible winds. In the end we gave up fighting the storm and decided to enjoy a weekend off the mountain discovering the country’s #1 sight Milford Sound. It was well worth it!

Spring Intermission

Warming temperatures, and lots of sunshine brought spring-like conditions over NZ, forcing us to travel around a lot to encounter nice snow. Currently we are sitting in the middle of a storm cyclone with winds blowing at gale force. But according to weather forecasts, winter is supposed to come back next week, bringing heaps of his sweetest gift: fresh snow!

Downdays

Not beloved but sometimes necessary, down-days are used for a variety of off-mountain activity. Some would rather call it killing time waiting for snow, however, in the end, those down days just make the days of riding memorable.

Heliskiing

The Mackenzie High Country is home to New Zealand’s highest peaks and therefore offers amazing ski and snowboard terrain for the adventurous. With roads ending far from the snowline, the access to those mountains can be challenging. Unless you go by helicopter!

Cardrona

Today we went up to Cardrona to check out what is going on in NZ’s freestyle parks. Cardrona currently hosts the Burton Open Snowboard event and we made it right on time to see the Superpipe finals. The setup of yesterday’s Slopestyle event was also pretty amazing.

Three Remarkable Days

On the first day, we encountered The Remarkables Ski Area pretty well tracked out. NZ really needed some fresh snow!

The following night it was raining cats and dogs and we had serious problems getting up to the ski field because our snow chains broke. With half a snow chain on only one wheel we happily reached the car park. First tracks in 20cms of fresh snow, there was simply no time to take shots, and it kept snowing all day long. On day three the sun came out and the ski patrol opened some back bowls which have been untouched still. Untracked steep chutes in combination with dry powder usually get you some decent faceshots. Hell Yeah!

Around noon the trail up to the peak was opened and we couldn’t resist to hike the peak ourselves. So our day ended with a run of some 400 meters of vert, making turns in virgin snow from top to bottom. We were just stoked.

Wanaka

Two down days are definitely enough, it was time for action. Wanaka’s home mountain Treble Cone offers some great terrain with vistas leaving your mouth wide open. The area was pretty much tracked out, but with a little imagination we found some untouched patches to throw down.

West Coast

After some amazing days in the Craigieburn Range we decided to head further south. It took us two entire days to drive about 500 kms down to Wanaka, just because of the beauty of the land. From jungle to glaciers, from sandy beaches to rocky mountains, the landscape changed as soon as we came around a corner of the highway, producing numerous “ooohs” and “aaahs”. Here are just some impressions of our journey.

Craigieburn Valley

Bluebird! After a frosty night in our van we woke up to clear skies and headed straight to Craigieburn Valley Ski Field. Well, first we had to drink some tea to warm up, but we were quite fast actually…

Markus chased the van up the narrow access road and when we arrived at the parking lot, we couldn’t believe our eyes. An incredible terrain waited for us, easily accessible huge lines, no groomed terrain, everything in its natural shape. Breathtaking vistas to all sides were our fellow companions.

After doing some shots in the nice rocky runs of the ski field, we started looking for something…let’s say…bigger! So we chatted with the ski patrol about the avalanche conditions. The snowpack seemed pretty stable and there were these really nice and steep chutes on the other side of the field.

Sebastian: “I was thinking about skiing down one of the chutes over there”
Ski patrol: “Go for it!”
And after a couple of seconds “But don’t hurt yourself!”

A few minutes later I found myself hiking the ridge to get to chute I chose to ski earlier. It was just great! Skiing such steep lines under perfect weather conditions on one of the first days of our trip was amazing. I couldn’t have asked for more. Great terrain, great snow and, of course, GREAT pictures.

Travel

30 hours on a plane just to get back to the cold frosty winter? YEAH DUDE!
Christchurch welcomed us with cold winds and the smell of snow. That put a smile on our faces. We picked up our van and headed straight to the mountains. The Craigieburne Range rises steeply from the Canterbury Plain and welcomes us with loads of fresh snow. Tomorrow it is time for action.

Hamburg

Last week the crew of bamboo and I made a trip to Dachstein for a fotoshooting. Actually we planned to shoot 4 days on the glacier, but weather was pretty bad. We had to wait 3 days for bluebird but then a really nice session started.
